14.1 - In Translation

In this issue, Ricepaper speaks to Toronto International Film Festival programmer Raymond Phathanavirangoon on the current state of Asian cinema; Jessica Yee reflects on being Asian, Aboriginal, and Canadian; and we interview Olympic wrestling champion Carol Huynh. Also featured is new poetry from Evelyn Lau, Ray Hsu, and Onjana Yawnghwe, and short fiction from Jenny Uechi and Harmony Ho.

14.2 - Aesthetics

In this “Aesthetics” issue, Ricepaper looks at the complex meaning of Aesthetics through visual art, choreography, and even land use. Jessica Jone contemplates her experience taking on the management of her family business – dance school. 14.3 - Space:Culture:Place

This issue of Ricepaper looks at the interrelationship between space, culture, and place.  Feature articles include a profile of Sook-Yin Lee—a multi-talented Canadian media personality, a look at Chinatowns across Canada, and a discussion with community and city planners on the revitalization of Vancouver’s own Chinatown. This issue also  marks the beginning of the regular column “Writers-in-Dialogue,” with poet-scholar Ray Hsu in conversation with Fiona Tinwei Lam critically discussing the craft of writing and her new book Enter the Chrysanthemum.

This issue explores different ideas of gender, both contemporary and historical.  Stephanie Lim’s The Case of the Miss-ing Surname investigates the experiences of three women and their decision whether or not to keep their surnames after marriage. Fumie Von Dehn, kimono collector and designer, is profiled. And Alphonse Leong contributes Slow Dance, a short but poignant film script.

15.1 - Trade Routes

In Ricepaper’s ongoing “Writers-In-Dialogue” column, Gillian Sze goes tête-a-tête with Fred Wah. Meanwhile, Candice Okada explores Brendan Tang’s futuristic ceramics, Amy Chow investigates the issues surrounding human trafficking and the sex trade, and Stephanie Lim contributes a feature profile on Huang An-lun, renowned Chinese composer. This issue also includes Terry Watada’s short story, “Light at a Window”, which is a sort of re-imagining of the Romeo and Juliet narrative as well as poetry by Kevin Irie, “Tom Thomson: A Minority Report”, bringing us a new perspective on the Group of Seven member.

15.2 - RepresentAsians

In this issue, Joni Low looks at the various Asian visual art-makers who had their fifteen minutes of limelight during the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and Margaret Inoue looks at the exhibition at the Japanese Canadian National Museum showcasing photographers Leonard Frank (Canadian) and Ansel Adams (American) and their images of the Japanese internment camps. Cheryl Caballero tackles the representation of Asian women, and the connection between Western patriarchy and sexual stereotyping. Lydia Kwa also contributes new short work, “My Mother Loves Teapots.”
