For two decades, Ricepaper Magazine published profiles, Q&A, and interviews from some of the most prominent artists, scribes, and influencers in the Asian Canadian community. The Ricepaper Second Serving series offer readers a chance to look back at our history and remember some thought-provking words spoken and written by those who helped change it.
Coming from East Vancouver has shaped me in every way actually. I think just about everyone on my block is an immigrant. I know you can say that for just about everyone in Canada, but on my block, everyone came to Canada within the last 20 years. I am very proud of being from my neighbourhood, though I haven’t officially live there for the last handful of years. But I spent 20 odd years there, my family’s there and I have dozens of relatives, all in East Van. It’s also shaped my politics, which I bring to my creative work. My politics are decidedly that of a leftist, working-class, blue-collar immigrant. That’s the stuff I’m very vocal about and I like proliferating those ideas. – Norman Yeung
